Jessie’s Grove Winery
The Details
Joseph Spenker rolled into Stockton in 1868 with just 27¢ in his pocket. Fast forward ten years, and he owned over 1500 acres of prime Central Valley land, including what’s now Jessie’s Grove. In 1870, he attended a wedding in Stockton, met a beautiful girl named Anna Schlieman, and married her the next day! They had two kids, Jessie and Otto, who grew up in the home Joseph built for his family in 1906. Joseph planted his first vineyard in 1888 and kept adding more over the years. Many of these vines are still going strong, producing some of our most cherished wines.
In the late 40s and 50s, Jessie was all about preserving the Oak Grove. This remarkable lady witnessed two world wars, saw women gain the right to vote, and managed three large ranches. She passed away in 1952 at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of strength and independence. Jessie truly followed in her father’s honorable footsteps and was a pioneer lady of the San Joaquin Valley.
Our wine tasting room on Turner Rd. is in an 1870s building, where we’ve kept the exterior looking just as it did back then while making necessary updates inside. Other cool spots include a two-story house built in 1905 and an 1870 barn in the oak grove that’s now our museum. We haven’t added any new buildings to keep that authentic historic vibe alive.
