February Wine of the Month

Our Wine of the Month for February 2018 is the 2014 McCay Cellars Tres Blanc.

Michael McCay and his family have farmed in Lodi for 20 plus years. Michael came to Lodi in the mid-1980s, started making wine in 1994 and launched the McCay Cellars label in 2007.  Focused on Zinfandel and Rhone varietal wines, McCay Cellars crafts wines in small case lots typically less than 400 cases per each), largely native yeast fermented, and aged in French oak barrels or stainless steel. Owner/winemaker, Michael McCay states his goal, “to make wine with a sense of presence that expresses the character and trueness of the vineyard”.

Tasting notes

The white wine is a blend of Vermentino, Verdelho, Muscat and surprisingly, Pinot Noir which is typically made into red wine.  It pours a pale golden yellow color with aromas of honeysuckle, orange blossom, apricot, key lime zest and a hint of wet stone.  On the palate, it’s light-bodied and dry with lively acidity and green apple, ripe pear, grapefruit, and lemon peel flavors with a satisfying finish. finish.  Raised in 100% stainless steel.  SRP – $24| 12.5% abv

With the addition of Pinot Noir, this is a delightfully different white wine blend that is a great example of the diversity of grape varieties and creative, passionate winemaking that makes Lodi such a special place for growing and making wine.

Pair with: Steamed mussels, or clams in your favorite white wine sauce, cracked Dungeness crab, or pasta with pesto sauce.
