Your Essential Guide to Enjoying the Sandhill Cranes in Lodi
Surrounded by thousands of acres of protected wetlands, Lodi, California is a haven for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers.
Every fall, thousands of Sandhill Cranes arrive in the California Delta, spending their winter months feeding and roosting across the region’s waterways. Standing nearly four feet tall with wingspans up to eight feet, these striking gray birds create one of the most captivating wildlife displays in the state.
The Sandhill Crane Migration
From October through March, Lodi becomes the winter home for the Sandhill Cranes that migrate from as far as Alaska and Canada. These graceful travelers return to the same roosting areas year after year, feeding on leftover grains, seeds, and invertebrates across the Lodi Wine Country wetlands.
To celebrate their arrival, locals and visitors alike gather for the Sandhill Crane Festival every November — a beloved tradition celebrating more than two decades of conservation, education, and community connection.
